United Way marks EITC Day > United Way of Southwestern Indiana is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service to promote National Earned Income Tax Credit Day, which is Friday, January 29.

The Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC, helps offset Social Security taxes and provides an incentive for work. It is the federal government’s largest benefits program for working families. The credit can make life a little easier for workers struggling to make ends meet in today’s tight economy — up to $5,600, or more, easier. Yet, IRS estimates one in four eligible taxpayers could miss out on this valuable tax credit because they don’t check it out.

2010 VITA Sites are here > United Way of Southwestern Indiana would like to encourage taxpayers to get free help determining their EITC eligibility and claiming the credit through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites.  Help is available from IRS trained volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm (and Mondays by appointment only from 1:00 to 4:00 pm). To find out if they qualify, or for a list of what to bring for tax return preparation, taxpayers can dial 2-1-1 or 812-421-2800.
