COMMUNITY GOAL: Together we can increase financial stability for  working families.

THE ISSUE: Right here in Southwestern Indiana, too many families are walking a financial tightrope – barely getting by with no ability to save for college, a home or retirement.

United Way increases financial stability for working families by:
• Increasing financial literacy, including budgeting, savings and access to non-predatory services.
• Reduce housing, food and other insecurities

KEY STRATEGIES: United Way formed the Financial Stability Partnership (FSP) to create awareness about poverty in our community and to provide new opportunities for self-sufficiency for working families.

The FSP organized Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Sites (VITA). In 2008, over 400 clients received free tax preparation, bringing a total of over $400,000 back into our community. An estimated $4 million goes unclaimed in Vanderburgh, Warrick and Spencer Counties. By offering tax preparation assistance and awareness of savings plans for working families and individuals, United Way will help bring those dollars back into our community and the pockets of our citizens.

This partnership will create lasting changes in people's lives with economic benefits that ripple throughout Southwestern Indiana. Do you want to be a part of this effort? Volunteers are needed to be certified tax preparers and greeters at the free tax sites. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Emily Baxter.

United Way is proud to partner with the City of Evansville, the Federal Reserve of St. Louis and 15 Banks and Credit Unions on Bank On Evansville to help unbanked individuals open accounts. United Way 2-1-1 is acting as the information and referral line for this new program.

Bank On accounts can even be opened for those individuals that have had trouble with an account in the past. A bank account can save money on check cashing and other fees. Financial Literacy classes are also available through the Bank On Evansville partnership.
